East Coast tries to pick up pieces after devastation left by Irene
Hurricane Irene left a trail of destruction in its wake, causing 21 people to lose their lives while about three million people across the eastern sea board were without power on Monday. The hurricane landed in North Carolina and continued its path up the east coast and into New England. Currently the main concern is the presence of large scale flooding throughout the region with many areas considered to be largely impassible at present. Downed power lines are also a concern as are the conditions of roads that were in the hurricane's path. The U.S. Navy has dispatched two warships to assist with rescue efforts while the Federal Emergency Management Agency vowed to work with those effected long after the news story had passed.
