Senate rejects balanced budget plans
Both Republican and Democrat plans for a balanced budget were defeated by the U.S. Senate with the Republican plan being defeated along party lines while the Democrat's plan was defeated by a much wider margin. A balanced budget would not only have to pass through Congress but would have to be approved by 75% of the state legislatures.
