China defends carrier plans, neighbors fret over
China's retrofitting of an old Soviet Aircraft Carrier and its constructing of two new aircraft carriers has created great concerns for its neighbors in the Pacific Ocean. China maintains that it needs a strong naval presence to enhance its own security and also as a matter of national pride. In response, China's neighbors have begun to build up their own navies in response to China's activities.
