The United States is about to call for the Syrian Regime of Bashar al-Assad to step down, according to officials within the U.S. Government. The U.S. Treasury is also about to initiate new sanctions against the regime targeting members and friends of the ruling family as well as Syria's financial and commercial infrastructure. The U.S. is expected to make the announcement in the next few days after it has conferred with the U.N. Security Council.
